Hobby Golfer

May 22, 2016

If golf is just a hobby and you play just occasionally you need a ball which helps you to enjoy the game. The biggest challenges for the hobby golfer are consistency and distance. You will hit a couple of fantastic shots, but now and then there will be the nasty slice to the right or hook to the left. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could find a ball that helps you to add more distance and reduce your slice by up to 50%?

1. Callaway Hex Soft Golf Ball

Technical Specifications:

  • Long, Straight and Soft – HEX Soft is a distance ball with great feel. It provides low spin for distance off of woods, hybrids and irons. It reduces spin for straighter ball flights with fewer hooks and slices. And it delivers soft feel on shots around the green.
  • Soft Feel – This is a soft golf ball with low compression and great feel off your irons and on shots around the green.
  • Long Distance – A low compression core is designed for ball speed with reduced spin to increase distance
  • Flies Straight – Built for low spin that leads to a straight ball flight

What they say: HEX Soft is a long, straight and soft golf ball with low compression, great distance and reduced spin with fewer hooks and slices.

What we say: The Callaway HEX Soft Golf Ball is designed for the hobby golfer. It is a true high performance golf ball with its specifications designed especially to support the hobby golfer: Its two piece structure takes spin away from the long shots whilst adding more “bounce” to the club face for a long and straight shot at reasonable costs (approximately half the price of Callaway’s Ball for Elite Players).

What they say: FORE Left or Right! Straighter-longer shots are the key to success in golf. Take advantage of the all new e6, the softest multilayer golf ball on the market, designed to improve your accuracy and your game. The newly engineered WEB Dimple enhances surface coverage for improved ball flight for more distance.

What we say: The Bridgestone e6 Golf Ball is very popular amongst hobby golfers and we can confirm that they make a good choice. This ball ticks all the boxes: It is incredibly long from the tee. It is very straight and it is reasonably priced (just in case you hit one into the water). If you are a hobby golfer who wants a ball to assist your game, lower your score and have more fun, then go for Bridgestone’s e6 Golf Ball.

4. Titleist Velocity

  • Dimple design Spherically-tiled 328 tetrahedral dimple design.

  • Cover system Thinner NAZ2 cover formulation.

  • Core Larger and faster LSX core technology.

What they say: The Titleist Velocity golf ball delivers fast initial ball speed on all full swing shots for explosive distance while providing playable feel in the short game. The exclusive LSX core produces high initial ball speed for more power off the tee and shorter approach shots into the green. The advanced spherically tiled 328 tetrahedral dimple design delivers a more penetrating trajectory with a shallower angle of descent for even more roll. Titleist Velocity golf balls provide power, precision and playable feel.

What we say: The Titleist Velocity could have won this category, because it is just a fantastic golf ball that gives hobby golfers everything they need to improve and enjoy the game. However, there are two big negatives: 1) Price – Most hobby golfers will lose a number of balls during the round in the deep rough, water or out of bounce. As the Titleist Velocity is very pricy (Titleist recommends a price of $35 for 12 balls) it is definitely a big minus. 2) Specifications – Have a look at Titleist’s cover system description above: NAZ2 cover formulation … We have no idea what that is. The ball seems a little bit over- engineered for the average hobby golfer. But if you like that, go for it, the Titleist Velocity golf ball’s performance is fantastic.

What they say: The Wilson Staff Fifty Elite golf ball delivers balance to your game. Synergies between an advanced rubber core chemistry and a firm ionomer cover yield a fast, 50 compression golf ball with powerful acceleration.

What we say: Although the Wilson Staff Elite Fifty Golf Ball might sound like a ball for elite players, it isn’t. It is a classical two-piece golf ball designed to deliver distance and keep the ball straight. And it does exactly that at a reasonable price. A very good ball for every hobby golfer.
